The Aromatic Use Of Essential Oils

Feb 28, 2019

It’s no secret that I love essential oils!

I have been obsessed since April of 2016.  We all have a story that got us hooked on these amazing gifts of the Earth, and they are all sort of the same, I have found.  There is that moment when oils were not part of your life, and then the crossroad of the moment where there is no way forward except with these magical oils in tow.  Here is my story:

It was just a regular day in the colon therapy office, seeing clients, cleaning colons, you know the usual, and then came in this client that was just a little … off.  It’s as clear as day in my mind even now, but it is still hard for me to put my finger on exactly what it was that gave me that feeling of “hmmm….not sure how I feel about this one…”.  I was very aware of the feeling, but I proceeded with caution and decided to take it step by step.  The client filled out his intake form, and I noticed he was on some interesting medications.  His affect was very strange.  He was difficult to communicate with.  He didn’t fill the form out completely, even skipping a whole page (it’s 3 pages long you guys, it’s not like it’s a ton of paperwork..), but there was nothing in his history that jumped out at me to make me say no we shouldn’t go through with the colonic.

We start the session, and almost as soon as I started the water, I had to stop it.  I saw the smallest bit of blood in the tube and immediately stopped the session.  This client had an internal hemorrhoid that he failed to mention on his form, and he was experiencing a flare up at the time.  He told me that “oh yeah, it gets irritated when I get colonics, but that’s normal for me, I’ve bled many times before”, but being a new therapist on top of feeling that extreme trepidation from our earlier interaction, I told him I wasn’t comfortable proceeding.  He understood and packed up and left.

What does this have to do with essential oils?

I was absolutely beyond all words beyond anything I have ever felt in my entire life, FLIPPING. OUT.

I have never experienced extreme anxiety before.  But I am certain that what I was feeling in that moment was anxiety on steroids.  My heart was racing a mile a minute, I was sweating, I was hyperventilating, I would have been crying if I hadn’t been so stuck and frozen in that moment.  For my friends out there who deal with anxiety and panic attacks—I had no idea what you have been dealing with.  I am so sorry that more people don’t understand what you go through, and that many of us (myself included) incorrectly use the word “panic attack”.

Luckily my boss was at our office at the time that this all went down.  She saw how distressed I was and took the reigns.  She sat me down in the treatment room, and it was there in that moment that she changed my life forever.

She pulled out a bottle of doTERRA Lavender essential oil and gave me a drop in my palms.  She told me to cup my hands around my nose and take 3 slow deep inhales.  I’m not joking, you guys, it was after those 3 deep breaths that everything was suddenly gone as fast as it came.  The fear, the worry, the hyperventilating, the racing heart, all of it – gone.  2 minutes prior to this experience with the lavender, I was flipping out about the fact that this guy, who may or may not be crazy and off his rocker, was probably going to sue me for all I’m worth (my only asset at the time was my Camry and my dinky little retirement fund), I was probably going to have to move out of my apartment, and oh yeah I was probably never going to be able to get a job again.  The rabbit hole of my brain is a scary place sometimes.

After the lavender, none of it mattered.  It was actually okay that they may take my Cam!  And it’s all good if I have to leave my apartment because I have friends I can couch surf with for awhile!  And screw it, they can have my dinky little retirement fund! Everything.was.fine!

After that, I was hooked.

I WITNESSED IN MY OWN BODY HOW QUICKLY THAT LAVENDER HAD A POSITIVE AFFECT ON ME.

NOT ONLY DID IT EASE MY MENTAL STATE, BUT IT CREATED A PHYSIOLOGICAL SHIFT WITHIN MY BODY, AS WELL.

Essential oils are considered volatile organic compounds, with “volatile” meaning they are capable of eliciting a change or a response very quickly.  This is why aromatic use of essential oils is so good at helping with mood and negative emotions.

See when you inhale an essential oil, there are millions of olfactory nerves located inside the nasal cavity that pass the signals to the olfactory bulb, which then disperses the signals to several different structures in the brain.  Have you ever heard of the limbic brain?  Well the olfactory system is intimately connected with the limbic system, otherwise known as the “primitive brain”.  It is the part of your brain that is associated with storing and releasing past emotional trauma, accessing long-term memories and emotions, and regulating blood pressure, heart rate, and attention.

When you use essential oils aromatically, it is a quick and powerful way to affect emotions, hormones, and memory.  You can do this either by taking a drop of oil in your hand, cupping your nose and mouth and inhaling, or you can put a few drops in your diffuser to enjoy!  I love diffusing because then everyone gets to enjoy the benefits of oils, not just me!  If you have oils that have purifying and cleansing properties (like lemon, lime, melaleuca, firs), then diffusing them will help freshen and improve the quality of the air!

My boo loves earthy scents like sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, and cypress.

I am constantly rotating through my collection of oils, and I love them all so much.  Lately I’ve been diffusing vetiver, bergamot, and roman chamomile because it is so calming and relaxing.  Oh!  And just the other day, the downstairs neighbors were smoking, so to mitigate the effects of the smell, I diffused melaleuca and Purify®, a doTERRA blend that has lemon, citronella, Siberian fir, Lime, melaleuca, and cilantro.  It actually helped a lot!!

Bottom line:  Aromatic use of essential oils is wonderful.  It is beneficial to everyone in the room.  It is so easy.  It is extremely powerful for helping elicit positive emotions, reduce anxiety, and instill joy.  Who doesn’t want more of all that?!

Remember that the QUALITY of your essential oils is of utmost importance!!!  Don’t be buying your oils from Target® or Walmart®, or Whole Foods or Natural Grocers for that matter!!  The FDA does not require companies to put 100% pure organic oil in their bottles in order to label it 100% pure!!  Does this upset anyone else??!  It’s false advertising people, aka LYING.  Quality matters!  I cannot tell you the number of times I have had people tell me that they use essential oils all the time, omg they are awesome, omg I love them, they are pure b/c I got them from Whole Foods etc etc, and then they take a whiff of my doTERRA essential oils and they can’t believe how different the smell is, and go figure – they can’t believe how quickly and efficiently my essential oils actually WORK.  Do your research people.  QUALITY.MATTERS.
