A Coach For The Health Coach

Apr 16, 2021

Some common misconceptions about health coaches are that we have cracked the code on the healing puzzle:::

—> We are the paradigms of health and wellness and live these storybook healthy lives that take little effort to maintain.

—> We are done with our healing journey and that’s why we are able to educate and coach others on their own path to wellness.

Nope! Not even close.

Truth telling time!

I am very much still on my own healing journey, and full disclosure – I probably will be until the sun rises in the west and sets in the east (GOfT reference anyone?)

I even have my OWN coach! Actually, I have two! I have a functional nutritionist who helps me with all the things that relate to my gut health/hormone imbalances, and an accountability business partner who keeps me honest and ensures I get shit done in my business.

I am always working on myself, trying this new healing modality and that new latest greatest thing that boasts optimal health. I am always finding new and creative ways to reduce stress, eat better, drink more water, find exercises I love, and get better at meditating.

I AM ALWAYS LEARNING, ALWAYS STUDYING, ALWAYS READING THE LATEST STUDIES AND BOOKS AND ALL THE THINGS RELATED TO THE AREAS OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS THAT SUPPORT MY CLIENTS AS WELL AS MYSELF, TOO

One thing I really struggled with at the beginning of my coaching was imposter syndrome.

  • How am I going to help others get well if I, myself, am still not quite all the way well?

  • Who the hell do I think I am to be able to give someone tools and advice on something as important as their health?

  • I have never been on a weight loss journey – how is someone going to trust me with theirs?

  • I am still healing my hormones! How am I going to be viewed as a valuable resource to women who need help healing theirs?!

  • I know shit about building a business, Instagram, branding, blogging, SEO, etc etc etc vom vom vom – there’s NO way I can do this.

  • I haven’t read all the books yet – how am I going to give someone the best experience possible when I don’t know all the things yet?!

It’s a hamster wheel of doubt and stress, and its going to keep on spinning as long as I let it.

So one day, I stopped! I stopped spinning. I got off that ride and settled into my own heart.

I STOPPED WORRYING ABOUT WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW, AND I FOCUSED ON WHAT I DID KNOW

AND I STARTED TO REALLY BELIEVE IN MYSELF, EVEN WHEN I FELT UNCERTAIN.

I think that is one of thee most important things if not the number one thing you should look for in a health coach – their desire to keep learning.

The day I have it all figured out is the day that my clients should look for a new coach lol.

I see this all the time in the hospital. I have worked with hundreds of doctors over the last 12 years of being a critical care RN, and the docs who have always blown me away in terms of their skills and abilities to provide the best care to their patients are the ones that are always learning and remaining open to that which they do not know.

Truth be told – no one will ever have it all figured out. Not the person with all the fancy degrees from various renowned universities and 45 letters behind their name, and not the health coach with this cert and that cert.

A doctor that becomes unteachable or thinks they know absolutely everything there is to know about ANYTHING in their particular field, is maybe not the best person to entrust with your one and only life. I almost value their teach-ability and learnability more than I do the MD behind their name.

Looking for a good coach? Find someone who is always learning and expanding their knowledge base. A coach who has a coach is another great indicator that they are walking their talk. It’s important for your health coach to value healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle as much as they are purporting them to you in your sessions together.

So yes, this health coach has a health coach. And I’m so proud to be knee deep in my own healing journey. This allows me to operate at my best, feel my best, and live my best life so that I can deliver the best to my clients.
