I’m sitting here in my absolutely darling living room, looking out the window at a rainy afternoon, diffusing On-Guard and drinking some in my tea, and I can’t help but feel like throwing a little pity party for myself because I am right in the middle of my second gnarly cold in the last 2 months, and I just plain don’t feel great (insert tissue/thermometer/masked face emoji). This seems a little ridiculous, to be sick twice in two months!
It all started out so simple.
Got a tickle in my throat on Saturday night. Just a tiny one. But I knew what was coming down the hatch….
Fast forward the next couple days and it’s just like any other cold.
Throat tickle into actual pain in the throat, then it migrates up to the nose and then you get stuffed up and simultaneously runny nosed …then the sinus congestion happens.
And the green goo that is coating the inside of your trachea is coming out in actual chunks…
Then it travels on down to your lungs where it settles and causes all kinds of thickness and congestion and wet phlegm rattly nastiness.
Cue the tortuous sleeping, where you can’t breathe out of your nose so you have no choice but to mouth breathe for 8 hours, and when you wake up your tongue is as dry as the Sahara, your lips are all chapped and gross, you can’t swallow even if you wanted to, you’re groggy from sub-par sleep, and then you start to cough in hopes of clearing out the thick green goo caked in the back of your throat/trachea/lungs, and then the pain starts from coughing and round and round we go until 1-2 weeks have passed when the virus finally calms the f down and moves on to someone else to start this nonsense again…….
(unfortunately that someone is now my boo…. Such is life, sharing a home and germs and surfaces with someone else, it’s bound to happen..)
But don’t worry, babe!! I got ya covered ;)
Here Is What We Do In My House When We Get Sick
We immediately start to FLOOM
Do you know what it means to FLOOM? If not, you’ve come to the right place! FLOOM stands for this:
These 5 magical essential oils together make what we call the “Immunity Bomb”.
You put 2 drops of all 5 of these oils into a veggie capsule and take 3-4 times per day.
Frank for overall cellular integrity/support
Lemon because it is cleansing and purifying,
On-Guard because it is a powerful immunity blend
Oregano because it has powerful antiviral/antibacterial/antifungal properties
Melaleuca because it also has powerful antiviral/antibacterial/antifungal properties. I love this hack for colds/sickness!!
(this time around, I don’t have melaleuca, so I have been substituting thyme in place of it. Thyme also supports a healthy immune system. I gave my melaleuca to my dad because of a toe infection he has been dealing with. You may not be surprised to hear that just a few days of using it helped clear up the infection and now he is done seeing the podiatrist! Yayyyy for melaleuca! If you don’t have melaleuca on hand, just substitute thyme in your FLOOM Immunity Bomb. Or shall I say your FLOOT immunity bomb?! Hehehe)
We use DDR Prime internally
DDR Prime is another proprietary doTERRA essential oil blend called that is wonderful for supporting immunity. We take 4 drops of DDR prime 2 times a day in veggie capsules when we are sick. DDR Prime is a blend of oils that have antioxidant properties as well as immune system supporting properties.
((DDR prime is also the blend that I gave to my dad as soon as we got his diagnosis of AML last summer. Morning noon and night he would take his DDR prime. His recovery was certainly multi-faceted and many people had their hands in him making a full recovery with absolutely no trace of leukemia at all after all was said and done (thank you to all of the medical professionals at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, my dad’s selfless bone marrow donor, and ALL the staff members nursing/CNAs/EVS/volunteers/every single last one of you thank you thank you thank you!), but I really believe with every single ounce of my being that our use of MANY healing modalities, including essential oils as part of his treatment protocol, supported him greatly and helped him in ways far beyond that of conventional medicine can explain.
We take turmeric dual chamber capsules
Everybody and their mama knows that turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and is incredible for helping to combat oxidative stress (and lets face, it oxidative stress just does not do good things for our our amazing cells). The only problem is that the active ingredient in turmeric is called curcumin (or curcuminoids), and it is not very bioavailable in the body. Well doTERRA created an amazing product that combines turmeric essential oil with curcuminoids, and the research shows when you combine both turmeric essential oil and curcuminoids, the bioavailability of both increases! Yay!! So yes, we take this too when we are sick!
We add essential oils to our teas
We love a good cold tea, my personal favorites are from Traditional Medicinals and they are Throat Coat and Gypsy Cold Care. Any kind of herbal tea will do though. Sometimes I do lemon/ginger, chamomile/lavender, reishi/chaga mushroom, straight echinacea tea, etc. Just do whatever tickles your fancy. We give these teas a little something extra by adding immunity boosting essential oils to them:
(I’m experiencing soooo much congestion this time around that I added a little peppermint to my tea, and holy mother of pearl in heaven, the shock of the peppermint literally opens up my sinuses and it feels like I can breathe again. It’s cold. It’s invigorating. It burns a little but that just means its working right? And its freaking amazing. Do yourself a favor. Add a little peppermint to your tea and leave me a comment on how amazing it is.)
We diffuse oils around the clock when we are sick
I love diffusing On-Guard, Breathe, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Lemon, and Frankincense. These oils are wonderfully beneficial when taken internally (like in your veggie capsule or in your tea or water), and they are just as helpful when you diffuse them! Whenever you diffuse essential oils, you’re kind of like cleansing/purifying the air and providing benefit to everyone in the room. This is a great reason to diffuse when you’re sick so that everyone can experience the healing benefits of essential oils!!
I use oils in my bath
Okay so about the only thing that is getting me through my sick days is my bath time. I make it as absolutely hot as I can possibly stand (if I can get in it and submerge right away, its not hot enough. I want my skin lobster red and I want it to hurt a little at first lol), and once I’m in, I add 2 cups of Epsom salts with 2 drops of lemongrass (anti-inflammatory), 2 drops of Breathe (helps with respiratory issues/congestion) and 2 drops of peppermint (clears the airways like a charm!). And then I sit with a washcloth over my head, and another on my chest, and I put a drop of all 3 of those oils on my chest and create a steam blanket thing and oh baby….. its incredible. Clears me right out, makes me feel so good, and it honestly helps the body sick/malaise feeling that takes over when you are sick.
I add essential oils to my Neti Pot
I will add 1 drop of melaleuca or 1 drop of on-guard to my neti pot before I do the actual rinse. Whoa baby …. Not gonna lie this one burns a little bit, but now I won’t do a Neti pot without these oils!
I apply oregano to my feet
Oregano on the bottoms of feet before bed is another must. Lets be honest here … nobody really loves the smell of oregano. It’s kind of harsh, a little abrasive, and the only thing that gets me through my relationship with this oil is the fact that it kinda smells like pizza. I literally only use it when we are sick. Rubbing a few drops on the bottoms of our feet before bed and then slipping into some cozy socks helps ensure that we are getting a major dose of this kind of offensive oil. Sorry for all the oregano lovers out there. I just can’t with this one unless I’m sick. Don’t judge!
I use a throat spray made of essential oils.
This is my favorite Sore throat Spray recipe:
20 drops lemon
20 drops on-guard
10 drops melaleuca
10 drops oregano
30 mLs distilled water
Combine all of these oils, water, and FCO in a spray bottle and spray the back of your throat as needed.
Disclaimer: This one doesn’t taste that great. But it honestly works. It takes away that stingy pain from coughing all the live long day and actually provides a great deal of relief. It definitely tastes better than that gross Chloraseptic spray you get from the drug store. Chemicals and artificial flavorings, no thank you!
We use On-guard cough drops
The clove in On-Guard numbs up the back of your throat nicely! I always use these when I’m sick.
We use Breathe respiratory drops
They help open up the airways and bring some relief from all the blast and wretched congestion.
We apply essential oils topically to our swollen glands/sore throats
Roller bottle recipe for sore throat and swollen glands:
7 drops on-guard
3 drops lemon
3 drops peppermint
3 drops oregano
5 drops melaleuca
5 drops frankincense
5 drops thyme
5 drops rosemary
5 drops lavender
Combine all those drops in a 10 mL roller bottle and then fill the rest up with fractionated coconut oil. Rub this blend on your throat and swollen lymph nods under your jaw, neck and beneath your ears.
Some Important Facts About Essential Oils To Remember
LESS IS MORE
I would rather you use 1 or 2 drops of an oil several times throughout the day as opposed to like 10 drops only once a day. FLOOM for example, do it 3-4 times a day. On-Guard in your tea? Do one or 2 drops in each cup and drink several cups of tea throughout the day. Don’t do like 5 drops of on-guard and only do it once. Less is more.
OILS WORK IF YOU ACTUALLY USE THEM
If you let them sit all pretty on your shelf or in your cute wooden box and you don’t actually use them, well guess what, they aren’t going to support you when you’re sick. If you’re worried about the cost, just remember that essential oils are CENTS per drop. You save way more money with oils than with drugs/doctors visits/co-pays/ER visits/etc. If you don’t know how to get doTERRA essential oils for wholesale, you need to send me a message and I will help you get them. But actually USE your oils. Let them work for you!!
DILUTE YOUR OREGANO WITH A CARRIER OIL
Oregano is what we call a “hot” oil, meaning it can feel hot or burny on sensitive skin. I never apply oregano without a carrier oil. Fractionated coconut oil is your friend. Use it liberally to not only help dilute the hot oil, but also to help the essential oil penetrate deeper into your skin and also prevent evaporation.
DO NOT TAKE ESSENTIAL OILS INTERNALLY UNLESS THEY ARE CERTIFIED PURE THERAPUTIC GRADE ESSENTIAL OILS
Unless you know exactly where your essential oil was sourced, how it was extracted, where it came from, and unless you can ensure the purity of that essential oil and know for absolute certain that it was not adulterated in any way or sprayed with harmful chemicals or fertilizers or pesticides, DO NOT TAKE IT INTERNALLY. Quality standards for essential oils in the US are pretty crappy … and the FDA makes it so that any old essential oil company can legally only put 3-10% of actual essential oil in that bottle and it will pass as “100% pure!” UGH! Doesn’t this make you mad?? This feels like lying. And its garbage that this is even allowed. So you have to be diligent and researched in knowing about your oils and where you are buying from. Because of doTERRA’s commitment to sourcing the most pure and potent essential oils on the planet and doing so in a sustainable and resourceful manner, this is why I choose them and trust their products for myself and for my family. One of my favorite things about doTERRA is that on the bottom of every single bottle of essential oil you receive from them, there is a little serial number that you can plug into the website www.sourcetoyou.com and see how and when and where the testing was done and the quality reports that are generated for that particular oil. The transparency that doTERRA has is another reason that I will only ever use their oils in my house, and the reason they are the only company I recommend to anyone looking to start their essential oil journey. Do your research. Be that person that calls companies and asks them to produce a quality report. Ask questions. Ask them where they grow their plants. Ask them who does their testing. Is it done in house? Or is it done by an independent third party?
DO NOT MISTAKE THESE ESSENTIAL OIL HACKS FOR MEDICAL ADVICE
These are just things that we do in my house, little things that I have picked up on my own oil journey (and naturally forced upon my poor husband lol) and things that have worked beautifully for us over the years. Essential oils are incredible for enhancing health and providing a natural solution to many of the problems that life hands us, including getting sick. However, sometimes our illnesses definitely call for the attention of a physician. Only you know what is right for you and your body and your family and when you need to go to the doctor. If your illness necessitates a doctor, then definitely go see a doctor.
